Structure Fire Fort Motel
Friday, October 31, 2014
At 3:20 p.m. an Assistant Fire Chief from Union Fire Company in Hamburg was passing the Fort Motel when he noticed smoke coming from the building. He contacted the Schuylkill County Communications Center and reported the fire. Co. 56 was dispatched along with the full 1st Alarm assignment bringing Co. 42, 47 and SHFD Stations 1 and 4 to the scene. OFD Assistant Chief Zimmerman arrived on scene and assumed Command. Subsequent alarms would bring Pottsville Ladder 51 along with Station 70 on the RIT assignment. A Tanker Task Force was also dispatched. The building was heavily involved when the 1st units arrived on scene and consequently a defensive operation was mounted until the large volume of fire was knocked down. An extensive overhaul operation was carried out due to a thick layer of blown in insulation above the ceiling. The last OFD units cleared the scene at 8:30 p.m. Co. 42 mounted a fire watch on the building for several more hours. (Fire photos provided courtesy of Mark Krammes).
